Young Manukau amateur artist Adam Major (23) is hoping to pursue a career as a professional painter thanks to Very High Needs (VHN) funding hosted through the Enliven Individualised Funding service.
Adam, who has lived experience of Autism, significant sensory issues and ADHD, has been passionate about painting and drawing since he was a toddler.
However, access to funding has allowed him to follow his dream of becoming a professional artist.
Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, he held his latest exhibition at this year’s Auckland Easter Show coming away with a third place and a merit in his category. More importantly, he managed to sell one of his paintings and is currently considering other offers.
Adam’s mother Michelle Major says he attends an Art For All Trust programme that his VHN funding pays for. The funding also covers a support person to take him to the art programme and to fund a one-on-one session for Adam to help him with his complex needs.
“If we hadn’t got the VHN funding to be able to attend those programmes with a support person then it basically would have been impossible for Adam. He’s extremely sensory and needs the support of someone to manage those sensory needs. Without that support, he can’t cope.”
Michelle says the funding, hosted by Enliven, also helped purchase picture frames for his artwork using his VHN funding.
“The picture frames have been huge because when you frame the art properly it really stands out. It ensured that the pieces were presented professionally and appropriately for the exhibition, allowing his work to be shared and appreciated in a public setting.
“I’m super proud. We’re thrilled that other people see his artwork and go whoooa – that’s good.”
Alongside his creative development, Adam has benefitted from regular engagement in day programmes, respite supports and community access activities. These supports have contributed to improved routine, increased social interaction and ongoing stability in his daily life.
“Where Adam sees purpose, it’s super gratifying because you see him at his best and I think that’s the same for anybody with a disability,” says Michelle.
“If they can see purpose and appreciation for what they do it makes them shine even stronger.
“With Adam one of his goals is to continue with his painting and sell more which is a lovely transition for him.
“We can’t thank Enliven enough for supporting Adam to access the funding that has helped him so much to shine.”
