The good scout

Stewart helps out at the Pohutukawa Day Programme in Whakatane as part-time assistant, a paid job which was “only supposed to be temporary” when he started 10 years ago, after acting as a volunteer van driver. He does tai-chi and gentle exercises to music (GEM) with the clients, and takes them on picnics and outings, sharing his wealth of local knowledge. Team Leader Jackie Peterson says it’s amazing when these clients share what they have learned from Stewart, particularly since a number of them have dementia.

Stewart Sutton has been nominated for a Pride of New Zealand Lifetime Achievement award for his involvement with Scouts.
